Promises Made in the 2005 Mayoral Campaign
Promises |
What was done |
Infrastructure – "As Mayor, I will take advantage of the current low interest rates and borrow what we need to begin a long overdue program of repairs." |
Almost 40% of roads repaved, sewers cleaned and repairs made to worst spots, almost all necessary work done on water mains – number of flooded basements reduced by over 80%. Read more. |
Fiscal Responsibility – "I will seek to establish sound spending priorities and good budget management." |
Tax increases went down every year and taxes decreased for 96% of residents this year. Surplus grew five–fold to $1,500,000. Read more. |
Agglomeration – "As Mayor, I will work with the Mayors of the other 14 demerged suburbs to put pressure on the Quebec government…" |
Started the boycott which led to the Quebec government’s Law 22. This has helped Hampstead in many ways including lower taxes and control of our arterial road. |
Labor Relations – "I know what needs to be done to reduce the chances of strikes and work-to-rule campaigns." |
One of first towns to conclude both our blue and white collar contracts. Significant gains in efficiency and service levels (7 day coverage). Salary increases of only 2% for most years of the contracts. |
Sharing with our Neighbors – "I would negotiate to share services and facilities with Cote St. Luc and Montreal West." |
To name a few of our arrangements, our deal with CSL to use their snow dump saves us over $100,000 annually. We have access to the CSL library at a discount and we share the Montreal West hockey arena for our hockey programs. |
Young Families – "I will explore the needs of our young families, and work to ensure that services, programs and facilities address the needs of our youngest residents, our children." |
Day camp enrollment doubled. Over twice as many events for children. All parks brought up to CSA standards. Five of nine parks improved. |
Safety – "I will insist on better traffic enforcement by the police and I will use Public Security to help identify trouble spots." |
Tickets for moving violations are up 35%. Traffic accidents with injuries are down by 25%. Drug dealing in our parks has declined dramatically. Read more. |
Traffic Calming – "I will increase the use of traffic calming measures." |
More traffic calming measures have been implemented than in any past administration. |
Architectural Heritage – "Building bylaws will be reviewed and tightened." |
In order to preserve our architectural heritage two major by-laws have been passed to control house sizes and characteristics. |
Beautification – "Currently [2005] parks and streets are filthy. They will be better maintained and more decorative garbage cans will be installed." |
Added more garbage receptacles each year. Introduced dog bag dispensers. Beautified Fleet and Finchley Circle. Better maintenance of our green spaces. |
Dog Run – "I will do my best to get Hampstead its first dog run." |
We now have one of the finest dog runs on the island and it pays for itself. |
| Communications – "Hampstead deserves a Mayor who listens to you." | Introduced our quarterly newsletter, does regular surveys, responds to every letter, e-mail and phone call promptly. Contact Bill |
But Mayor Steinberg didn’t just keep his promises. He went well beyond! Imagine what he can do in the next four years, now that the town is in much better shape!
